The holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year, but it can also be the most chaotic time too. Then we add in owning a business and it all can be a recipe for disaster. We have found setting some time management rules and a little bit of organization beforehand can help tremendously.
The biggest challenge we find during the holidays is managing our time. There are so many things we want to do and so many people we want to see. But if we don’t take the time to plan and manage our time wisely, we can easily get overwhelmed and end up feeling stressed out.
One way to help manage our time during the holidays is to set some rules for ourselves. WCE has put together some simple, quick tips that you can easily start implementing today to help you get some control before the insanity starts.
5 Tips on Finding Peace During the Holidays
- Set a Timer for Social Media
- Don’t Set Crazy Short-term Goals
- Make Daily To-Do Lists ~ That are Realistic!
- Take Time Out to Declutter
- You Don’t Need to be Perfect
1. Set a Timer for Social Media
You have probably read that people suggest giving up social media completely to free up a lot of time. And though this is true it is not completely possible when you own a small business. Social media platforms are where you can communicate with your potential customers and connect with your current ones as well. Getting off social media as a business owner isn’t a good idea in our opinion, but do we need to be online 24/7? Absolutely not! Our suggestion is to set a timer – it can be 30 minutes a day, an hour per day, or even just 20 minutes. Whatever time limit you set for yourself – stick with it! This method can be used for more than just social media. Setting a timer for yourself with most tasks helps you stay on schedule.
2. Don’t Set Crazy Short-term Goals
Now is not the time of year to be setting high-level goals for yourself or your business to complete in the short term. Keep it simple. Finish up any loose ends with what you have already started and stay consistent with the things you already have in place. There is no reason to add anything extra to your plate right now. What you can do is start formulating your goals for the new year and Q1. Decide what you want and where you want to be with your business by the end of the NEXT quarter. WCE has a great worksheet HERE to help you organize those goals for next year.
3. Make Daily To-Do Lists ~ That are Realistic!
Make a daily to-do list of all the things you need to get done for that day alone. Prioritize what needs to actually get done. For example Holiday cards are great! Are they an absolute must…no. Remember less can be more. You want to enjoy the holidays and not be a giant ball of stress because of things that just were not necessary. When making your to-do list lists we suggest you do it the night before or early morning. The best way we have found is to set the day by hour and filling in what you will be doing each hour of the day. Keep in mind yours and your other family member’s appointments you have already committed to, when you need to eat, and also remember to take commuting time into consideration when plotting out your day.
4. Take Time Out to Declutter
This may seem like we are adding something to your to-list and give you less time in your day. While that is true, doing this task will make it easier to get those other tasks done more efficiently. Along with getting your spaces (including your workspace) cleared, now is great time to get rid of things that you don’t need anymore and donate them. Declutter can be a time suck so remember to set your timer while doing this. You don’t need to do a major overhaul on your house, just spending 30 minutes to an hour on a space can really help clear your mind as well.
5. You Don’t Need to be Perfect
This is by far the most important tip and one that needs to be said and re-said until it since it. You, your business, your family, and your holidays DO NOT need to Pinterest perfect. Jaron Lainer said “Seeking perfection in human affairs is a perfect way to destroy them” You will never fully enjoy this time of year (or any time of year for that matter) if you continue to seek perfection. Embrace the chaos and find the joy hidden within it. It’s there, we promise.
We truly hope this helps you with not only this holiday season, but with other big seasons in your life as well. Finding ways to simplify, create some organization (that works for YOU), and knowing it’s ok to not perfect in your life really can be a huge weight off of your shoulders. So take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy this special time of year.
