You Can’t Delegate What You Don’t Understand: Why Knowing Your Numbers Matters – Download Inside

Last week, we talked about using the 4Ds of Productivity to decide what to Do, Defer, Delegate, and Delete. One of the biggest takeaways was that delegation creates freedom. Whether you’re handing tasks to a team member, automating them with technology, or simply deciding they don’t deserve your time, delegation allows you to focus on the work that truly moves your business forward.

But there’s one area of your business that you should never completely ignore.

Your finances.

Yes, you can delegate bookkeeping to an accountant, payroll to a payroll company, or taxes to a CPA. But even if someone else manages the numbers, you still need to understand what those numbers are telling you.

Because if you don’t know your finances, you don’t really know your business.

Many entrepreneurs know how much money comes into their bank account each month, but that’s very different from understanding whether the business is actually healthy.

Here are some questions every business owner should be able to answer about their business:

  • Which products or services generate the most revenue?
  • Which ones are actually the most profitable?
  • Where is most of your money being spent?
  • Do you have enough cash available for unexpected expenses?
  • Are your profits increasing or shrinking over time?
  • Are there subscriptions, software, or expenses you’re paying for but no longer using?

Without knowing the answers to these questions, it’s easy to make decisions based on feelings instead of facts.

When you understand your numbers, you gain knowledge and confidence. You know where to invest, where to cut back, and where your biggest opportunities exist.

As your business grows, chances are you’ll eventually outsource some of your financial responsibilities. Which is a smart move.  But, remember – outsourcing should never mean becoming disconnected from your finances. Think of it this way: you wouldn’t hire someone to drive your car and never look at the dashboard again. You’d still want to know if you’re running low on gas or if the check engine light comes on.

Your business works the same way.

Your financial reports are your dashboard. They tell you what’s working, what’s changing, and what needs your attention before small problems become expensive ones. As you know, strong businesses aren’t built on revenue alone. They’re built on healthy profit margins, manageable expenses, positive cash flow, and intentional planning.

Taking time to review your finances regularly allows you to:

  • Identify opportunities to increase revenue.
  • Reduce unnecessary expenses.
  • Improve cash flow.
  • Pay down debt strategically.
  • Prepare for slower seasons.
  • Set realistic financial goals.
  • Build a more stable business for the future.

Even reviewing your finances quarterly can reveal patterns you might otherwise miss.

Financials audits do not have to be complicated and frankly the words “financial audit” sound intimidating and very scary to most, but they don’t have to be.
