What is a Sales Flywheel?
We touched on the idea of sales flywheels last week, but here is a refresher –
“The flywheel is a model adapted by HubSpot to explain the momentum you gain when you align your entire organization around delivering a remarkable customer experience. It’s remarkable at storing and releasing energy — and it turns out that’s pretty important when thinking about your business strategy. Invented by James Watt, the flywheel is simply a wheel that’s incredibly energy-efficient. The amount of energy it stores depends on how fast it spins, the amount of friction it encounters, and its size. Think of it like the wheels on a train or a car.” –HubSpot
A sales flywheel focuses on creating a self-sustaining cycle of growth by consistently attracting, engaging, and delighting your customers. Unlike the traditional sales funnel, which is linear and often ends after the sale, the flywheel is circular, representing an ongoing process that builds energy over time. The more you invest in each stage of the flywheel, the more momentum you create, resulting in continuous growth and customer loyalty.
Stages of a Flywheel
Our Sales Flywheel Worksheet is built around the Attract, Engage, Delight model, but we have added a few categories for each stage so that we are able to develop a more detailed flywheel and sales strategy :
Attract and Awareness
- Goal: Draw potential customers to your brand by offering valuable content and experiences that address their needs.
- Tips: Use content marketing, social media, and SEO to drive traffic to your website. Create educational blog posts, videos, and infographics that answer your audience’s questions and solve their problems.
Engage
- Goal: Build meaningful relationships with prospects by offering solutions tailored to their specific needs.
- Tips: Offer lead magnets like free eBooks, webinars, or templates in exchange for contact information. Use email marketing to stay in touch and provide personalized content that nurtures trust and moves them toward a purchase.
Decision/Purchase
- Goal: Motivate prospects to take action & conversion of leads into customers smooth and easy
- Tips: Offer limited-time discounts, free trials, or personalized consultations. Make the purchasing process as smooth and straightforward as possible. Optimize your checkout process, ensure secure and safe payment methods, and/or send post-purchase emails.
Delight
- Goal: Ensure that your customers are not just satisfied but delighted with their experience.
- Tips: Provide exceptional customer service, engaged customers are more likely to become repeat buyers and refer others to your business.
Post Purchase Retention
- Goal: Turn one-time buyers into repeat customers.
- Tips: Provide excellent customer service, offer loyalty programs, and regularly check in with your customers to ensure they’re satisfied by conducting customer satisfaction surveys.
Advocacy
- Goal: Turn customers into brand advocates or promoters
- Tips: Launch referral programs, encourage and collect reviews, engage with customers on social media, and develop and share case studies.
The true power of the flywheel lies in its ability to generate ongoing growth. As you attract new customers, engage them with meaningful interactions, and “delight” them with outstanding service, they will naturally feed back into the flywheel by bringing in referrals and repeat business. This continuous loop reduces the need for constant new customer acquisition efforts and instead focuses on maximizing the value of your existing customer base.
A well-executed flywheel strategy doesn’t just help you grow—it helps you scale efficiently.
Like mentioned above, to help you get started with building your own flywheel, we’ve created a free Sales Flywheel Worksheet. This easy-to-use resource not only guides you through each stage of the Attract, Engage, Delight model but also includes an important preliminary step: answering key questions about your business.
Why is this important? By answering these questions, you’ll gain a clear understanding of who your target market is, what problems they have, and how YOU can solve them. This knowledge is crucial for crafting a sales strategy that resonates with your potential customers. You’ll be able to tailor your messaging to speak directly to their pain points and needs, sparking their interest, and encouraging them to engage with your business.
The Women’s Council of Entrepreneurs team has also included a Flywheel Analysis portion of the worksheet that you can fill out after you have had some time executing your sales strategies. This section of the worksheet will walk you through assessing the effectiveness of your flywheel and you will decide if any adjustments are needed. By consistently refining your approach to attracting, engaging, and “delighting” your customers, you will build a sales strategy that will take your business to new heights.
